“My job is Shuji Terayama” is a famous phrase he left. He was enough versatile to involve himself in various areas, I suppose; because I don’t know other works than this work I first met. Nevertheless, reading his poems, I can recognise deeply how sharp his sense was.
Can we shoot
He uses such passage in order to question to us the power of words. There are those who think of how words hurt our heart, but probably, no one but only Terayama asks whether words can shoot a gull or not.
Words I threw away might be
Good to use for someone
“Words” he uses can be replaced with other words. For instance, how about “emotion” ? “Emotion I threw away might be / Good to use for someone” or “Can we shoot / A gull / With emotion”. From these attempts, it can be possible to understand that Terayama profoundly recognised a multifaceted trait of words as to construct his poems.
The example that “words” is replaceable with “emotion” suggests words contain emotion as well. So how about trying to substitute other words you like for “words” he uses in his poems ? You will encounter a great discovery, definitely.
